Manual and Automated Testing for Telecom Company 

The client is a telecommunications provider offering broadband, mobile, and cloud communication services. They manage a complex ecosystem of web portals, mobile apps, CRM/billing systems, and network management platforms.

Before our team joined the project, the development team had established a robust suite of unit tests + manual testing for the web application. The mobile application was functional with minimal disruptions in production.

Challenges

• Testing on different browsers and mobile devices was required.
• Performance issues during peak usage.
• There was a need to optimize the test runs to reduce the time needed for complex tests.
• Slow adaptation to mobile-specific functionalities.
• Security testing.

Solutions

• Used the built-in option of WebdriverIO when running on different browsers and simulating mobile viewing for the web app, which, in turn, still required updating the tests due to a different logic with mobile viewing.
• Conducted rigorous performance testing under different load conditions to identify and optimize scalability.
• Utilized API queries during specific test stages to reduce time to execute preconditions and postconditions.
• Accelerated mobile testing by introducing targeted automation scripts for mobile-specific features.
• Employed robust security testing to identify and address potential vulnerabilities, ensuring end-to-end encryption and data integrity.

On this project, the primary tasks were the automation of existing test cases, the creation of new ones, and ensuring user data security. To accomplish these tasks, we utilized the following tools/ frameworks.

• Programming language: TypeScript
• Automation frameworks: WebDriverIO + Mocha + Appium for cross-platform, cross-browser, web and mobile testing
• Security testing tools: OWASP ZAP
• CI/CD integration: Integrated autotests in the GitLab pipeline
• JIRA: for task management, bug tracking, and project management
• Microsoft Teams: communication among team members, ensuring timely issue resolution, and efficient project management.

• ~70% of regression tests automated, reducing manual QA's involvement in regression cycles by 60%.
• Ensured the absence of post-release bugs across all standard user scenarios.
• Over 350 defects logged and resolved, including critical billing and network activation issues.
• Performance testing revealed API response issues, improving average latency by 40% during peak loads.
